Here’s a novel idea. Instead of the usual bachelorette party, why not do something that everyone will be able to use afterwards? Something like basic cooking? And you don’t even have to try and figure out where to go, I’ll tell you: ChefMLK School of Cooking in Kempton Park.
A few weeks ago Chef Martin invited a few bloggers over for a morning of prepping, cooking, eating and fun. When we arrived at the school we were welcomed by an honour guard formed by the students. After a tour of the facilities, it was time to get down to business.
Off with its head
I was really excited about having the opportunity to fillet a fish. I’d like to think I’ve got the cooking basics covered, and it was nice to try something new that was also something pretty easy to do – even if it was with the assistance of a student. Chef Martin did a demonstration and then we each moved to a prep station to decapitate, descale and debone a fish. Once we had the two fillets, we seasoned, layered with steamed spinach and rolled up in foil. About ten minutes in boiling water and our fishies were ready to be served.
I was really impressed with how my fish turned out – and I made it myself!
Just desserts
Okay, no. This wasn’t just dessert 😉 We got to assemble our own dessert with amazing ingredients. A base of peanut brittle soil, and stacked up there were divine lime fudge, raspberries, gooseberries, rose macaron, all of this then covered with a chocolate dome. That’s when the fun starts. The students came around with heated Crème Anglaise to pour over the dessert and we all watched in awe as each one’s chocolate melted away. It was a fantastic way to end of the day.
