Three books to dive into

Two James Pattersons and a JoJo Moyes – it almost sounds like the start of a new game. But it’s what the fantastic people at Penguin Random House sent me and Louisa. So if you’re looking for something to read next weekend, you have options.

A delightful book about Lila, a mother with two daughters, a stepfather and a biological father all living in the same house. Lila wrote a best-selling book about keeping your marriage alive, and now her agent is waiting for a follow-up. Lila’s father suddenly arrives on her doorstep after leaving her and her mother when she was still small. Her mother died a few years ago, and her stepfather gradually started spending more and more time at Lila’s house, which suited her very well. Lila’s husband moves in with a younger mum from the school who soon becomes pregnant.

Lila had started a sequel to her novel but now realises that the first book is not a true reflection anymore of being happily married, so she has to re-think about what to write. Many heartfelt moments, the power of forgiveness and a single mom doing her best to find herself and who has a new complicated love life. A charming read about what she is going through and what her teenage daughter Celie is going through. Highly recommended.

Rhonda Bird, a former attorney, takes over her father’s detective agency. With her sister, Barabara (Baby) Bird, who is still a teenager, the two Bird sisters set out to solve crimes that come their way.

They are hired by the husband of a missing woman who recently won the lottery. The police think he is guilty, and Rhonda is warned off by a man trying to kill her.

Baby is also undertaking her own case of which Rhonda is unaware of what Baby is up to and which puts Baby and her client in danger. Eventually, with the help of Rhonda, they are unable to solve the case.

There are many hiccups, but sheer determination keeps the sisters going.
While Rhonda is determined to track down a serial killer, Baby is determined to help Arthur, who recently lost his wife and where someone is trying to drive him out of his house.

The book is easy to follow, and the plot makes for light reading over a weekend. Lots of intrigue and a twist at the end.

Two sisters who do not always see eye-to eye but proves that blood is thicker than water.

An intense Michael Bennett thriller. Bennet, as usual, does what he does well: chase killers. Inspector Celeste Cantor has discreetly asked him to investigate retired cops and drug dealers who are being murdered and made to look like suicides.

Michael asks Rob Trilling, who has a crush on Michael’s daughter, to assist him. Michael’s wife, Catherine, is expecting a baby and needs complete bed rest. His son Ricky is trying to get onto a cooking show, and even though he is accepted, it doesn’t go according to plan. Michael’s home life has become boring, and I would prefer not to read about his large family and their ups and downs.

Bennett eventually finds out who is responsible for the killings, and he also discovers that he is on the hitlist of the assassin, but Michael is always one step ahead.

An enjoyable but predictable read. I prefer to just read about his police work and not about his home life.
