Book Review: Nemesis by Greg Hurwitz

Fans of high-octane thrillers will find plenty to admire in Nemesis, a relentless, hard-hitting novel that proves once again why Greg Hurwitz is a standout name in modern action fiction. This instalment in the Orphan X universe delivers exactly what readers expect: blistering pace, razor-sharp tension, and a protagonist who never stops moving.

At the centre of the story is Evan Smoak, a former government black-ops assassin trying, never easily, to stay alive in a world that refuses to let him go. Evan is forced into a dangerous hunt for Tommy, a man he believed was a trusted friend and long-time weapons supplier. Convinced that Tommy has betrayed him, Evan prepares for confrontation, only to discover that matters are far more complicated than they first appear.

Running parallel to Evan’s pursuit is Tommy’s own mission: helping the son of a deceased friend. This moral thread adds emotional weight and challenges Evan’s assumptions, injecting ambiguity into what initially feels like a straightforward betrayal. Hurwitz excels here, using divided loyalties and shifting truths to keep the reader constantly reassessing who can and cannot be trusted.

The novel rarely pauses for breath. Evan finds himself relentlessly pursued by a brutal assassination team, forcing him into a series of tightly choreographed escapes and confrontations. The action scenes are intense, cinematic, and unapologetically violent. Hurwitz does not soften the edges; there are several graphic and disturbing moments, making it clear that Nemesis is not a book for the faint-hearted.

Adding further tension is Evan’s strained relationship with the young woman who assists him with his technological needs. Their clashes bring a sharp, human friction to the story, breaking up the violence with moments of conflict, frustration, and reluctant reliance. These interactions help ground Evan’s character, reminding the reader that beneath the lethal efficiency is a deeply damaged man struggling with trust and control.

Nemesis is fast-paced, ferocious, and thoroughly gripping. Greg Hurwitz delivers an intense thriller that will keep readers on edge from start to finish. While the violence may be too much for some, fans of Orphan X will find this a compulsive, adrenaline-fuelled read that lives up to the series’ reputation. Highly recommended for readers who like their thrillers dark, intense, and unrelenting.
