Bottoms up pink flamingos

It’s October – the pink month – and it’s already ridiculously hot in South Africa. So what better way to cool down than with some tall, chilled drinks. Not much gin this time, mostly rum and just a dash of vodka.

Pink Flamingos #1

45 ml light run
30 ml dark rum
15 ml vodka
Splash of cherry juice
Top off with Sprite
Maraschino cherry

Fill a shaker with ice.
Add all ingredients except Sprite cherry and mix.
Pour into an ice-filled Collins glass, top with Sprite and garnish with a cherry.
Serve with an umbrella – or flamingo – and enjoy this while standing on one leg!

Pink Flamingos #2

45 ml vodka
45 ml Cointreau
3/4 glass orange juice
A dash sloe gin

Fill a shaker with ice.
Mix all the ingredients to gether and pour into a Collins glass.
Cheers!

Southern Pink Flamingos

15 ml Southern Comfort
15 ml Malibu rum
A splash pineapple juice
A dash grenadine
A dash lemon juice

Mix in a shaker half-filled with ice and strain into a cordial glass.

Pink Paradise

45 ml coconut rum
30 ml Amaretto
90 ml cranberry juice
45 ml pineapple juice
Pineapple wedge and/or maraschino cherry for garnish

Combine all ingredients over ice in a tall glass and garnish with a pineapple wedge and cherry.

As for what rum to try, I’m not an expert, but some interesting local ones I’ve noticed on social media are Sugar Girl Rum and Gertie’s Liquor, and gin distillers Still 33 and New Harbour Distillery have diversifiedtheir portfolio of offerings to include rum. If you’ve tried anything noteworthy, let me know!
