CANSA raises awareness with the Rooibos bra

A Rooibos bra is exactly what you think it is – a bra made almost entirely from used Rooibos teabags.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know that breast cancer affects 1 in 27 women in South Africa?

The Rooibos bra, crafted by Storm in A-G Cup, will be auctioned in late October in aid of CANSA’s women’s education programmes.

Why Rooibos?

The powerful antioxidants in Rooibos tea help to fight inflammation – often the leading cause of cancer.

Higher survival rate

Detecting breast cancer early improves your chances of survival, which is why regular screenings and mammograms are critical.

I had my first mammogram done late last year. It was a little scary because I didn’t know what to expect and have only heard horror stories of pain. I think it helped that they asked volunteers to knit squares, so I was calmer by the time I went in.

It was a little uncomfortable, but the most pain I experienced was from my shoulder – it has been giving me trouble for over a year now, and didn’t like to be at that angle.

After the mammogram, I had an ultrasound done to check on some spots that turned out to be cysts.

Bid on the bra

Expectations are high that the Rooibos bra will raise a significant sum of money – it is, after all, a one-of-a-kind.

And as all the proceeds will go to saving lives through education and early detection, it is likely that people will be happy to dig deep into their pockets.
