Cape Town to host its first ABB FIA Formula E World Championship E-Prix

I don’t have much to say about the end of the F1 season that hasn’t already been said. So, moving on.

Cape Town will host the first ABB FIA Formula E World Championship round in Sub-Saharan Africa on 25 February 25 2023.

Alberto Longo, Co-founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E, praised the local partners for working tirelessly to bring an ABB FIA Formula E World Championship race to South Africa. Imagine watching the futuristic Gen3 race cars compete against the iconic natural backdrop of Table Mountain.

Formula E’s third-generation race car can reach speeds of 320 kph.

The Gen3 electric cars will race through the Green Point and Waterfront precincts, with Signal Hill and other iconic Cape Town landmarks serving as backdrops. This 2.8-km, 12-turn track is expected to be one of the series’ fastest. Twenty-two electric cars will leave from the start line on Vlei Road, take the first left turn chicane into Helen Suzman Boulevard, and then the second left turn chicane into Granger Bay Boulevard.

The track descends Beach Road in Mouille Point, following the oceanfront before turning sharp left onto Fritz Sonnenberg Road and concluding with a final right turn to the finish line.

The Gen3 is the world’s first race car specifically designed and optimised for wheel-to-wheel street racing. In addition, it’s the world’s first net zero carbon race car in the world’s first net zero sport, which sets a new standard.

Activities on race day

At each race, the Allianz E-Village serves as the hub of the fan experience, offering a variety of entertainment and activities for Formula E fans of all ages.

Test your skills: Fans can learn about the latest innovations and test their own racing abilities by competing on racing simulators to set the fastest lap and win prizes.

Fuel up in food courts: Fans can recharge between scheduled track events and E-Village activities thanks to several responsibly sourced food and beverage vendors.

Lead-up to the race

In the week preceding the Cape Town E-Prix, Cape Town will host E-Fest, a 10-day themed festival of activities and events showcasing e-mobility. It commemorates Go Green Africa, a shared mission founded by organisations dedicated to playing a meaningful role in accelerating Africa’s transition to a “Green Economy” in a just and inclusive manner.

E-Fest Cape Town will feature various activities promoting electric mobility, including:

  • EVRT Africa – an all-electric vehicle road trip.
  • ELECTRIC – an e-mobility festival that features everything electric, including EVs, motorcycles, one-wheeler scooters, bicycles, and charging solutions.
  • A Golf Classic championship-level golf invitational event.
  • The Africa Green Economy Summit (AGES), promoting and connecting global capital to African Green Economy opportunities.

I’m keen to attend, but travel, accommodation, etc., is simply not possible unless I’m sponsored. So, who’s going to sponsor me? 😉
