It was once associated with Giuseppe Cattaneo, an Italian-born postwar artist and Wits lecturer who lived and worked there from 1962. Cattaneo was part of the Amadlozi Group, alongside important South African art figures such as Sydney Kumalo and Edoardo Villa.

Rather than flattening that story, the team preserved parts of the original house and integrated them into a contemporary steel-and-glass structure. Now known as “The Ruins”, the Doppio Bistrot site shows how heritage can be experienced through everyday life: over meals, conversations, coffee dates and long lunches.
